A 5-year-old Bronx boy who came down with a fever a day after returning from a family trip to Guinea does not have the deadly Ebola virus, initial test results showed Monday.
“The result of the test is negative,” city health officials said in a statement. “Out of an abundance of caution, further negative Ebola tests are required on subsequent days to ensure that the patient is cleared.”
The boy — whose dad said was running a 103-degree temperature Sunday night — will remain in isolation at Bellevue Hospital until the tests for Ebola and other possible respiratory illnesses are finished, officials said.
Jittery neighbors who live in the family’s building on East 172nd Street in Soundview said they were happy the boy appears to be in the clear.
“Everyone can breathe a sigh of relief,” said neighbor Juan Flores, 48. “I’m so happy for the family. I’m sure they were so scared.”
City health officials visited the neighborhood earlier Monday, handing out information on Ebola.
The family’s apartment and building were not decontaminated because there is “no evidence of Ebola so no decontamination would be appropriate,” Mayor de Blasio said Monday.
