A Brooklyn jury yesterday awarded a $5 million verdict to a mentally ill man who sued the NYPD, claiming cops broke his hip during a 2005 arrest.

Demetrio Davila, 42, was assaulted by cops as they cuffed him in a Brownsville stairwell, according to court papers.

“My client was severely damaged by the actions of the police officers,” said trial lawyer Nina Neumunz, of counsel to law firm Herschel Kulefsky. “His father helps him put on his pants because he can’t bend over.”

“We believe that the police officers . . . acted appropriately,” said city Law Department tort division chief Fay Leoussis. “We are disappointed with the verdict and are assessing our options.”
