6 hurt as cabs crash
Two cabs collided in a spectacular crash in the East Village last night — bringing down a sidewalk scaffolding shed as they jumped the curb, officials and witnesses said.
Six people were injured — including two seriously — in the smashup on Broadway and East 8th Street, just before 8 p.m. that left both vehicles buried in debris in front of a Gap store. Witnesses said it appeared that the cabs were either racing or trying to overtake one another when they lost control.
“The backside of one cab hit the pole,” said witness Mark Seran, 47. “Then they spun and the scaffolding collapsed.” Rescuers took all of the victims, who were all in the cabs, were taken to St. Vincent’s Hospital.
