VALLEY STREAM, N.Y. — Police say six people have been injured in an apartment building fire on Long Island.

Nassau County police say the fire erupted at 4:45 a.m. Monday at 316 North Central Ave. in Valley Stream. Four residents and two firefighters were removed to area hospitals. The extent of their injuries was not immediately available.

The Red Cross is on the scene assisting 40 other people to find shelter.

The fire has been brought under control.
