A veteran Colorado paramedic who traveled to the Big Apple to volunteer during the coronavirus crisis has died of the disease, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Friday.
Paul Cary, 66, “came very bravely to serve us” from Aurora, signing up for Ambulnz’s State of New York COVID Response team, Hizzoner said at a press conference.
His main duty involved transporting patients infected with the bug, Denver-based KCNC-TV reported.
“He did not have to do it,” de Blasio said. “To the Cary family, we honor Paul’s sacrifice. We honor what Paul did to save lives while he was here.”
Cary was one of about 500 paramedics and EMTs who traveled last month from across the country to the city as part of a partnership between FEMA and the Big Apple, the FDNY said.
“Paramedic Paul Cary spent a lifetime helping and caring for others,” Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro said in a statement. “He bravely served the people of Aurora, Colorado, for three decades and then, as the COVID-19 pandemic attacked our city, he bravely came to help New Yorkers as well. All of us in the FDNY mourn his loss.”
Paul CaryFDNYCary began developing symptoms on April 19 or 20 and was admitted to Montefiore Hospital a day later, Ambulnz officials told KMGH-TV. The company said it learned of his death Thursday.
“Paul made the ultimate sacrifice for his country and will forever be remembered as extremely dependable and completely devoted to his work,” the private ambulance service said in a statement.
Aurora Fire Rescue tweeted that Cary spent 30 years with the department, and “will be remembered as an EMS provider who gave his all to care for others.”
Cary leaves behind two sons and four grandchildren, the local station reported.
His family said they respected his decision to volunteer.
“He risked his own health and safety to protect others and left this world a better place. We are at peace knowing that Paul did what he loved and what he believed in, right up until the very end,” they said in a statement to KCNC-TV.
And his service will not be forgotten.
“We’re going to find a way to create a special memorial for Paul here in New York City to remember all those who came to our defense,” de Blasio told reporters.
