CAMDEN, NJ — A 73-year-old former labor investigator has been sentenced to 42 months in federal prison for taking bribes to understate the amount of taxes temp agencies owed New Jersey.

James Peyton, of Salem, pleaded guilty last year. Prosecutors say the New Jersey Department of Labor & Workforce Development assigned him to audit the temp agencies’ records to ensure compliance with the state’s payroll-tax laws.

In addition to doing time, Peyton has been ordered to repay New Jersey more than $119,000 in restitution.
