A holiday weekend fishing trip nearly turned deadly for eight men when their boat was swamped by a wave and sank off the coast of Staten Island Saturday.

Two crew members and six fishermen were aboard the “Karen Ann’’ charter boat, at a lighthouse about five miles off the western tip of the Rockaways, when they were clobbered by a monster wave at 10:45 a.m.

“We took a couple of waves over the back of the boat while we were picking up the anchor and the boat lifted and then the boat went down,” Captain Vinnie Calabro told The Post.

As his boat was sinking, Calabro broadcast distress signals and made sure all aboard were wearing life jackets. Another boat owned by the same charter company heard the calls and rushed to the scene.

“The mate told me the boat was in trouble, it was sinking… As soon as we got there I saw the boat… there was a small piece of it sticking out of the water… I grabbed the binoculars and started looking for people in the water,” said Jay Van Deven, who was on the rescue craft.

“At first we didn’t see anyone… It got scary.

“Then we saw people in the water. We yanked them up on the boat,” Van Deven said.

None of them was injured.

“They were a little shaken up but they were in good spirits. One guy was like ‘ay you got any beer?’,” Van Deven said.

He had brought some dry clothes for the rescued fishermen who were dropped off at Sheepshead Bay.

Calabro said the boat will be salvaged and he’s thankful to be alive.

“I feel fine, unfortunately this happened but there were no losses of life, no injures, so we have a lot to be thankful for.”
