The West Wing is undergoing an $86 million renovation that will include everything from water- and sewer-line upgrades to the digging of a mysterious tunnel.
The construction din has made routine business a major challenge, staffers say. A government spokeswoman said the tunnel is nothing more than a means of maintaining access to the utilities.
The West Wing revamp is part of a $376 million multiphase project by the General Services Administration that will progress across the White House grounds and last four years.
