AMHERST, N.Y. — A 90-year-old man charged with murdering his wife of nearly 68 years is due in a New York courtroom Thursday.

John Bunz was charged with second-degree murder on Sunday after the body of 89-year-old Virginia Bunz was found in the couple’s apartment at a suburban Buffalo retirement community. John Bunz was briefly hospitalized with self-inflicted wounds.

He’s scheduled to appear for a felony hearing in Amherst Town Court Thursday.

Police so far have not said how Virginia Bunz was killed or discussed a possible motive, saying only that the death appeared to be a domestic homicide.

It was unknown whether Bunz has a lawyer. There was no listing for one at the court.

The couple would have celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary April 4.
