ALBANY — Hours after the New York Giants won the Super Bowl, a commemorative license plate was unveiled.

Two New York lawmakers say a similar tribute to the “real heroes” of the 9/11 attacks is long overdue and they shouldn’t take a back seat to millionaire athletes.

Republican Assemblyman James Tedisco and Republican Sen. Kenneth LaValle introduced a bill to create a license plate to honor the first responders and victims of the 2001 terrorist attacks.

Until the Cuomo administration quickly unveiled the Giants plate design, the state had stopped offering new commemorative plates. That was in part because of a lawsuit by an advocacy group.

The Tedisco-LaValle bill would direct the fee revenue from a commemorative plate to charities benefiting the families of those killed in the attacks.
