A student-pilot license that belonged to Thurman Munson — the Yankee catcher and captain who was just 32 when he perished in a 1979 crash while soloing in his new plane — is up for auction on eBay.

The asking price for the signed Medical Certificate 3rd class and Student Pilot Certificate, which gives the date of examination as March 7, 1978, is $16,500 or “best offer.”

The certificate, framed with a photo, is being auctioned by California-based Memory Lane Inc. on behalf of a client who bought it at a 2007 auction, according to Memory Lane staffer Ian Taylor.

Munson was making a touch-and-go practice landing and takeoff on Aug. 2, 1979, when his twin-engine Cessna Citation smacked into the ground short of Akron-Canton Airport, just miles from his Ohio home.
