Seventy volunteers have signed up to escort women past protesters at abortion clinics, city officials said yesterday.
City Council Speaker Christine Quinn launched the effort late last week with advocates who charged that anti-abortion demonstrators were becoming more aggressive and blocking young women from accessing services.
Training is being provided tomorrow and Monday. The escorts are scheduled to work each of the next eight Saturday mornings.
A council spokeswoman said the 70 were “more than enough” to cover the clinics.
