New York City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams revealed Wednesday she’s tossing her hat in the race for mayor after weeks of speculation that she’d join the crowded field of Democrats looking to knock off Mayor Eric Adams.

“New Yorkers can’t afford to live here, City Hall is in chaos, and Donald Trump is corrupting our city’s independence,” she said in a scathing statement announcing her mayoral run.

“It’s time to stand up. I never planned to run for Mayor, but I’m not giving up on New York City,” she added in the statement first shared with Politico.

The council leader, 64, is expected to hold a rally on Saturday to kick off her campaign, according to two sources.

Chatter about Adams’ run grew louder over the last week after she filed paperwork for a campaign committee and claimed during a press conference that “stakeholders” were pushing her to join the race.

Adams, who has been a forceful critic of Mayor Adams, would be the first woman to lead City Hall if she came out top in a June primary and then the general election.

“Our city deserves a leader that serves its people first and always, not someone focused on themselves and their own political interests,” she said in her Wednesday statement.

“I’m a public servant, mother, Queens girl and I’m running for Mayor. No drama, no nonsense—just my commitment to leading with competence and integrity.”

Adams, who has no relation to the mayor, was elected to the City Council in 2017 before becoming the first black council speaker in 2022.

Her announcement comes just days after former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo officially kicked off his mayoral campaign.

Other Democrats that want to lead Gotham include City Comptroller Brad Lander, state senators Zellnor Myrie and Jessica Ramos, socialist state Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani and former city comptroller Scott Stringer.

The growing number of candidates comes as Mayor Adams fights for his political life.

Hizzoner is facing allegations that he agreed to help President Trump with his immigration enforcement in exchange for the Department of Justice dropping his federal corruption case that remains in limbo.

The mayor has vigorously denied the quid pro quo accusations and the criminal charges against him.

Still, Adrienne Adams called on the 64-year-old mayor to step down last month after four City Hall deputy mayors announced their resignations amid the avalanche of accusations. The council speaker claimed in a statement on Feb. 17 that City Hall “no longer has the ability to effectively govern” with Mayor Adams in charge.
