Attorney General Andrew Cuomo announced today that he won a court judgment of over $3 million against a Queens woman who allegedly ripped off immigrants by promising to help them attain green cards, his office said.

Cuomo said Miriam Mercedes Hernandez, 56, defrauded immigrants out of hundreds of thousands of dollars — prompting Cuomo to file suit last year claiming she “engaged in fraud and deceptive practices and violated New York civil rights laws when she falsely promised to assist individuals and families seeking legal status.”

Hernandez wrongly claimed that she could obtain expedited legal status for people through her relationships with government officials, Cuomo claimed in the suit filed last May in Manhattan Supreme Court.

“The court’s decision gives full restitution to victims who trusted this person to help them, and, in the end, were left with little more than lies and false promises,” said Cuomo. “The victims in this case had the courage to come forward and help prevent more innocent people from falling prey to this fraud.”

Cuomo claimed Hernandez charged her unwitting victims upwards of $7,500 as an initial fee and as much as a whopping $15,000 per person for her services.

The problem is Hernandez “never performed the services promised,” according to Cuomo’s office.

When the victims asked a refund, Hernandez threatened them by refusing to return their documents.

Cuomo’s office said the suit against Hernandez was the latest in an ongoing probe looking into allegations that immigrants and their families are being targeted for fraudulent and unauthorized immigration-related services across the state.

Cuomo said his office would “continue to investigate anyone who seeks to exploit and defraud immigrants.”
