MASTIC BEACH, N.Y. — Long Island? Gator country?

An alligator was found lounging in a Mastic Beach yard this morning, apparently dumped by an owner who feared the beast was getting too big for comfort, Suffolk County police said.

A man managed to capture the 2½-foot critter in a plastic bin. It weighed about three or four pounds.

Police presumably advised the gator it had the right to remain silent as they taped its mouth shut to avoid injury.

It was taken to a nearby pet shop.

The shop owner says it was likely discarded by someone who feared it would grow larger and become dangerous.
