WOODHULL, N.Y.— Amish mourners from across New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio are gathering for the funerals of five farmers killed in a collision with a car and tractor.
The Rochester Democrat and Chronicle reports they began arriving Wednesday in horse-drawn wagons, cars and pickups as families in Steuben County prepared for funerals that could start on Friday.
The farmers were in a van touring two farms in Yates County when a car passing the slow-moving tractor crashed into them Tuesday. Six victims remained hospitalized Wednesday.
The driver of the car, 42-year-old Steven Eldridge of Penn Yan, is being held on five counts of criminally negligent homicide, driving while intoxicated, and other charges. Authorities say a court appearance Friday has been cancelled and the case will be presented to a grand jury.
