An early ‘Bell’ ringing
Community activists in Queens are taking it upon themselves to rename a street after police slaying victim Sean Bell next week — ahead of the official ceremony next month.
“We are here to say that as a community who loved Sean Bell, who struggled, who protested . . . for Sean Bell, we’re not going to wait for the mayor to sign off on his approval,” the Rev. Omar Wilks said. “The community, we are going to take charge and the community’s going to put a street name up for Sean Bell.”
A spokesman for Mayor Bloomberg said it is illegal to rename a street without city approval.
The renaming of Liverpool Street, where Bell was killed by 50 gunshots, is to take place in January.
