Andy ‘Independence’ day
TROY, NY — The leaders of New York’s Independence Party yesterday endorsed Andrew Cuomo for governor, setting up the Democratic candidate to run on a second line.
The endorsement by leaders of the state’s third-largest party clears the way for Cuomo to secure the line when it holds its nominating convention.
The line also provides a way for Republicans, whom Cuomo is trying to attract, to choose him without casting a Democratic vote.
In a joint appearance with Cuomo, Independence Party chairman Frank McKay said it will offer Republicans a “safe place” to vote for Cuomo.
