The Bronx councilman suspended by his colleagues Monday in part for describing a photo from a gay pride parade that featured Council Speaker Corey Johnson as “child pornography” denied making the remark — and then described Johnson as “still human.”
The embattled politician, Andy King, made the remark as he addressed reporters after the City Council voted 44-1 to suspend him for a month, fine him $15,000 and strip him of his committee assignments after a blistering ethics report found he abused his staff and misused city resources.
The 48-page report shows that in 2015, King compared a photo of Johnson and then-councilwoman Rosie Mendez dancing at New York’s gay pride parade to “child pornography.”
When asked by a Post reporter “did you ever compare homosexuality to child pornography,” he denied making the remark.
“I will say a definite no to that,” he said.
Asked immediately afterward by the same reporter if he felt comfortable being around Speaker Corey Johnson?”
“Yes, he’s still human,” King responded — and then chuckled.
Johnson made history as the first Council speaker to go public about his HIV-positive status and is only the second LGBT person to hold the post.
