Yet another high profile Department of Education administrator is leaving the agency.

Donalda Chumney, who served as superintendent in Manhattan’s high-achieving District 2, was approved as Chief Academic Officer of Norwalk Public Schools in Connecticut Tuesday night.

The veteran DOE administrator presided over one of the city’s top academic districts for two years and served in Brooklyn’s District 15 prior to that.

“Our collective work to contribute to our profession and to improve the lives of our students is ongoing,” she wrote in a letter to principals and colleagues last week. “We can, and we must, continue to collaborate toward that end.”  

The DOE said it would soon appoint an interim superintendent for the heavily sought after and scrutinized district and begin a search for a permanent replacement.

Beset by coronavirus upheaval and intensifying policy disputes, the DOE has seen a procession of departures in recent months.

Former DOE Chief Operating Officer Ursulina Ramirez and First Deputy Chancellor Cheryl Watson were among the top  who left the department prior to the start of the school year.
