Lefty Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is getting bashed for lashing out at a recent TV performance by the NYPD’s dance team — with foes saying her criticism only highlights the failures of her own party.
The Democratic congresswoman from New York City — who supported the “Defund the police” movement — was among those to take aim at the police department after its dance troupe performed on PIX11 late last week.
“How many school music programs got defunded for this,” Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) tweeted Monday alongside a clip of the female cop dance group — which is not funded by taxpayer money.

But some critics — while still condemning the dance team’s on-air gig — also seized on AOC’s remarks, suggesting her own party’s progressive policies are fueling Gotham’s biggest issues.

One person chimed in, “Meanwhile because of @AOC’s policies New York City is spending billions on illegal immigrants.”
Someone also asked, “How many school music programs could we fund if we got rid of useless, harmful politicians like you?”
The NYPD and its dance team have since addressed the widespread backlash, insisting the troupe is just like any other department sports team and that no taxpayer funds go toward supporting it.
The NYPD performance has sparked widespread controversy after critics questioned the importance of the dance team given the Big Apple is battling crime and a relentless migrant crisis. PIX11“We’re not looking to be professional dancers,” Autumn-Raine Martinez, the dance team’s president, told PIX11 on Tuesday. “Some of us have never danced before, some of us have danced our whole lives.
“Even with the comments we’ve been getting, we’ve been just leaning on each other, just supporting each other,” she said. “It’s already tough being on this [police] job, but then to have more things like that [criticism] for doing something we love doing is kind of hard.”
Mayor Eric Adams threw his support behind the dancers Tuesday, telling reporters at City Hall that anyone attacking the cops was “mean-spirited.
“We have an NYPD boxing team, NYPD hockey team, FDNY team. We have fraternal organizations. … It really humanizes our offices,” Hizzoner said.
“It is a way to alleviate the stress and difficulties and challenges of doing the job,” he continued, adding that he had asked the NYPD troupe to come to City Hall in the wake of the backlash.
“They will be around later. If any of you want to learn some moves, you could be here to participate,” Adams joked to reporters.
