An armed man was killed during a shootout with cops during an undercover drug operation in Upper Manhattan, police and sources said.
The drug sting was linked to a fentanyl bust, according to a source. NYPD officers and federal law enforcement, part of a joint task force, were trying to do a controlled buy at an apartment on Vermilyea Ave near Academy Street in Inwood when the mayhem erupted around 8:45 p.m., police and law enforcement sources said.
Friday night’s undercover op is the latest in a string of recent fentanyl busts in the city. Last week, authorities nabbed a Washington Heights man with about 20,000 rainbow colored fentanyl pills. And just days earlier in the Bronx, investigators found a $7 million stash of the drug, along with heroin, hidden in a secret compartment in a coffee table.
The task force overseeing the Vermilyea Ave operation included state police and federal DEA agents, and attempted to arrest two men who lived on the first floor of the building, when at least one of the suspects opened fire, NYPD officials said at a press news conference.
Law enforcement returned fire, striking one of them, cops said. The other man was taken into custody as officers rushed out of the building after the shootout to call for backup.
The wounded suspect barricaded himself inside the apartment, prompting hostage negotiation teams to respond to the scene, police said.

Authorities attempted to make contact with the suspect but were unsuccessful. After some time, officers were able to get a look inside the apartment and saw the man lying on the ground beside a gun, police said.
EMS units responded, but the man had already succumbed to his wounds, cops said.
No law enforcement officers were injured, but those involved were taken to area hospitals for evaluation, police said.
It’s unclear which agency or department fired the fatal shot.

The suspect that was detained was taken to a station house to be processed, according to police.
Two guns were recovered inside the apartment, police said.
