The Asian American woman whose brutal, caught-on-camera beatdown in Manhattan shocked the nation says she forgives her homeless attacker — but she has yet to heal emotionally.
“I prayed for him because I felt he needed prayers,” Vilma Kari, 65, told “Good Morning America” Thursday morning. “That’s the only thing I could do for him in the hope that maybe someday he reform[s] or he finds the right medicine, whatever needed.”
Kari was on her way to church on March 29 when her assailant, Brandon Elliot, shoved her to the ground and kicked her in the head several times outside 360 W. 43rd St. Video of the incident showed staff inside the building doing nothing to intervene.
Brandon Elliot allegedly screamed, “F–k you, you don’t belong here,” as he attacked Vilma Kari.
Vilma Kari says she is physically “healing well” after the brutal Manhattan attack. Good Morning AmericaCops said she was left with a broken pelvis and head injuries.
“Physically, I am healing well but mentally, emotionally, I’m not there yet,” Kari said Thursday, adding that she needs a walker to get around.
She told police Elliot, 38, allegedly screamed “F–k you, you don’t belong here” as he stomped her.
Brandon Elliot is charged with assault as a hate crime and attempted assault as a hate crime.
Surveillance video from the attack went viral as the country saw a surge in hate crimes against Asian Americans — which Kari said led to an outpouring of support.
“I would like to tell all of them, thank you from my heart because it has helped me and it’s still helping me in my recovery,” Kari said on the show.
Kari is also scheduled to appear on ABC’s “Nightline” Thursday evening.
“I’ve been asking those questions … Why me? Did I do something wrong? What did I do to provoke that? And all [my friends] could say to me is maybe there is a plan for you because you were spared and you’re a strong woman,” Kari says in a preview of the interview.
Elliot, who was out on parole after murdering his mother in 2002, was charged with assault as a hate crime and attempted assault as a hate crime.
He has pleaded not guilty and is being held on $500,000 bail.
