Even as city officials work to improve safety at Rikers Island, assaults on correction officers have continued to climb dramatically, data show.
From January through October, assaults on staff members are up 23 percent — to 707 attacks — compared with 574 incidents in the same period last year.
Correction-officers union head Norman Seabrook complained that misbehaving inmates don’t face any punishment.
