Astoria’s ‘short stories’
The city plans to rezone a 240-block swath of Astoria, Queens, to prevent high-rise towers from overwhelming an old-world neighborhood of three-story homes and mom-and-pop shops.
Under the proposal, most of the neighborhood would be limited to buildings of no more than four stories. On some high-traffic commercial strips, up to seven stories would be allowed.
The proposal goes before the Planning Commission tomorrow, beginning its 60-day public review process. It ultimately has to be voted on by the Planning Commission and approved by the City Council.
