A lawyer for a woman accused of tossing her toddler in the Hudson River before jumping in herself says the mother hadn’t previously shown signs of psychiatric problems.
Devi Silvia’s lawyer said after a Manhattan court appearance Friday that the May episode marked the first time Silvia’s bipolar disorder came to light.
The 33-year-old Silvia has pleaded not guilty to attempted murder. A judge agreed Friday to release her from a hospital jail psychiatric ward into what’s known as a civil commitment.
She’ll still be held in a locked facility unless doctors decide she’s well enough for release. A judge would then rule on bail.
The Indian-born Silvia and her 19-month-old daughter were rescued from the river.
