The town of Avalon yesterday opened what it says is the first public charging station for electric vehicles on the Jersey Shore.

Motorists will use “smart cards” or credit cards to activate the charger in front of Avalon’s public safety building. They’re notified by text message or e-mail when the charging is complete.
