The final hurdle to bring a long-awaited supermarket and retail center to the Brooklyn Navy Yard is now cleared.

New York Sen. Chuck Schumer announced yesterday that the feds will transfer ownership of the yard’s 6-acre Admiral’s Row site to the city so that construction can begin this summer. The city-run Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corp., which manages the 300-acre industrial park, will oversee development of a supermarket and additional neighborhood retail space.

The project is expected to create 500 jobs and includes the rehabilitation of two 19th-century buildings.

Admiral’s Row once housed the Navy Yard’s senior officers.

“This is truly a win-win-win for the people of Brooklyn and the families and seniors who live next door to the Navy Yard,” said Schumer.

Operators of the Brooklyn Navy Yard agreed to save a former military residence and a shed on historic Admiral’s Row.

But preservationists have ripped the compromise because it still allows nine other historic buildings to be razed to make way for the project.
