A 2-year-old girl in a stroller was killed and her mother was seriously injured when they were struck by a pickup truck while crossing a Long Island road on Monday night, police said.

Vilma Graciela Maurad Centeno, 21, was pushing her daughter, Nataly Brito Maurad, across Medford Avenue in Patchogue when they were hit by the driver of a 2005 Ford at about 6:20 p.m., according to Suffolk County police.

The victims were taken to Long Island Community Hospital, where the baby died.

The mother was then transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment.

The 61-year-old male driver stayed on scene and was uninjured.

The truck was impounded for a safety check, police said.
