Brooklyn’s beloved Green-Wood Cemetery warned Friday that bad behavior from a few visitors could force officials there to shut its gates to the public, closing off one of Brooklyn’s biggest stretches of green space in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.

“The conduct of a small percentage of our visitors has created an unacceptable situation. If things don’t change, we may be left with no choice but to close our gates as many other cemeteries have done,” cemetery President Richard Moylan warned in an email.

The Sunset Park cemetery is beloved in the borough for its tranquil environment and sweeping views of Manhattan.

And, officials there decided to keep their gates open everyday until 7 p.m. to give Brooklynites some needed space amid the COVID-19 crisis.

But some guests have flouted the cemetery’s rules by bringing in dogs, riding bikes and allowing children to climb trees, Moylan wrote. There have even been flowers stolen off of graves.

“Green-Wood is a cemetery. It is an arboretum, and a place of tranquility. Families come to visit the graves of their loved ones. It is not a public park,” he added. “It is a not a place of recreation. Our rules are clear on what is allowed and what is not.⁠”
