Two brave cops who survived recent shootings were promoted yesterday — and the one who was shot in the head called himself “the luckiest man on the planet.”
“God was looking out for me that night. I’m blessed,” said Kevin Brennan, 29, who was shot in Brooklyn on Jan. 31. Gangbanger Luis “Baby” Ortiz has been accused of pulling the trigger.
Police Commissioner Ray Kelly yesterday cited Brennan’s “stunning valor” as he promoted the seven-year veteran from officer to detective at Police Headquarters.
Detective Kevin Herlihy, 47, who fatally blasted career criminal Michael McBride in Harlem on Feb. 14 despite taking a bullet in the arm, was boosted to first-grade detective.
“Today, we recognize the amazing courage of two officers who, in the past four weeks, were shot by violent felons armed with illegal guns,” Kelly said.
Brennan, still recovering from his injury, said afterward, “I was fighting back tears.”
Brennan’s 8-week-old baby and wife were on hand for the big day, along with Herlihy’s wife, 14-month-old baby, and two boys.
