More than 1,500 Con Ed customers lost power for about two hours on Monday after a bunch of helium balloons knocked into overhead wires in Queens, the company said.

The balloons got loose at about 4:55 p.m. and struck the overhead wires at Francis Lewis Boulevard and Murdock Boulevard in St. Albans, a Con Ed spokesperson said.

The outage knocked out power for more than 1,500 customers in the area. It was turned back on at about 6:40 p.m.

Con Ed said it didn’t know where the balloons came from.

“It happens from time to time,” the spokesperson said. “They get loose, fly up into the sky and can hit wires.”
