SCHENECTADY — President Obama will be upstate next week, for the second time in less than a year, the White House announced yesterday.

The White House did not say why he’ll visit Schenectady, an ailing former industrial hub 10 miles west of Albany. The city of about 60,000 was the original headquarters for GE, which employed more than 40,000 people at its peak during World War II. There are only about 3,000 GE workers left there now.

Obama visited the Buffalo area last May to promote the administration’s efforts to shore up small business.
