A mammoth finback whale washed up at Atlantic Beach yesterday, distracting sun-worshippers from the otherwise beautiful day of sand and surf.

Measuring nearly 50 feet in length and weighing an estimated 30 tons, the mammal was likely dead for some time before washing up on Long Island.

Marine biologists had been tracking the whale since Sunday when it appeared off Long Branch, NJ.

It will be cut into pieces and incinerated after a necropsy.
