Nassau County wants to give smoking motorists a kick in the ash — introducing a bill that would slap them with a $1,000 fine if they light up with kids in the car.

The law, which would be enforced by cops, would apply to anybody spotted puffing with kids under 18 riding along.

The fine is 10 times greater than a statewide proposal that is under consideration.

That bill would apply only to kids under 14.

Nassau Legislator Judi Bosworth said she and colleague Judy Jacobs introduced the bill to protect children from secondhand smoke.

Unlike previous generations, “we know that any exposure to secondhand smoke is harmful to our health,” said Bosworth (D-Great Neck.) “Strangely, however, we can still smoke in our cars with children present and expose them to toxins.”
