‘Big Easy’ in the Burg
Williamsburg morphed into the “Big Easy” as jubilant revelers donned their sparkly purple and gold beads, and heralded the arrival of Lent with a Mardi Gras celebration and street parade — Nawlins-style.
Co-hosted by L Magazine and Brooklyn Bowl, the merry masquerade featured plenty of pomp and pageantry, igniting festivities with a free show by local bands Wavves and MNDR at the bowling alley — 61 Wythe Avenue — followed by a festive jaunt through the nabe.
A vibrant ribbon of marching bands, burlesque dancers, floats and fanfare drenched Driggs, Bedford and Wythe avenues in an explosion of color as mom, dad and the kids helped usher in the Christian calendar’s solemn period of fasting and rituals with a symbolic final hurrah, accompanied by a post-parade prize party at Brooklyn Bowl.
French for “Fat Tuesday,” Mardi Gras is also named “Shrove Tuesday” or “Pancake Day,” and precedes the 40-day season before Easter, lasting from Ash Wednesday to Holy Saturday.
