A Binghamton University student from Long Island was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison Tuesday in the fatal stabbing of another student.

Judge Kevin Dooley handed down the sentence to 20-year-old murderer Michael Roque in Broome County Court in Binghamton, telling the man, “You have no remorse,” the Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin reported.

Roque of Massapequa had pleaded guilty in September to second-degree murder in the stabbing death of 19-year-old Joao Souza, an engineering major from Rye Brook in Westchester County.

Souza was attacked the night of April 15 at Windham Hall on the university’s campus.

Dooley said Tuesday that the murder stemmed from Roque’s jealousy over his former girlfriend.

Roque had transferred to the school and stalked his ex-girlfriend, Dooley said.

Broome County District Attorney Steve Cornwell has said Roque attacked Souza in the bathroom of his dorm while roommates watched and later fled, according to the news outlet.

In Souza’s last breaths, he apologized to Roque about the girl who was involved, Cornwell said, the Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin reported.
