Biz spurns Cuomo’s tax
ALBANY — State Senate Republicans and business bigwigs urged Gov. Cuomo yesterday to jettison a utility tax from his state-budget proposal.
Cuomo’s plan to extend a surcharge that costs residents an average of $55 a year and a typical big business $30,000 would hurt economic growth, they said.
The surcharge, labeled temporary when Democrats imposed it in 2009 and used to pay general state bills, was due to be reduced on April 1 and eliminated on March 31, 2014.
A Cuomo aide said the governor happy to work with the GOP to “replace that revenue,” estimated to cost ratepayers nearly $3 billion over five years.
