Investigators have smashed a Brooklyn ring of insurance fraudsters that netted a whopping $400,000 by staging fake auto accidents, authorities said.
The 16 suspects arrested today collected payments on nine phony collisions that occurred between September 2009 through May 2011 and , police said.
“It’s a quick money scheme,” said Detective Patrick Donohue of the Fraudulent Accident Investigation Squad. “Tragically, I believe it occurs almost on a daily basis.”
In at least six of the accidents, the scammers intentionally crashed rented U-Haul trucks into livery cabs in Brownsville and East New York, Donohue said.
Under New York State’s “No-Fault” law , insurance carriers are required to reimburse up to $50,000 in medical costs for auto accident victims.
The investigation was carried out by the New York State Attorney General’s office, the NYPD’s Organized Crime Investigation Division and the New York State Department of Financial Services.
“This staged accident scheme put innocent lives in danger in order to make the perpetrators a quick buck,” said Attorney General Eric Schneiderman.
The crooks were slapped with a slew of charges including insurance fraud, grand larceny and falsifying business records, cops said.
