Brooklyn residents who were crying wolf yesterday should have been yelling wolf-dog instead.
An animal that residents had feared was a wolf prowling the streets of East New York on Tuesday evening turned out to be a wolf-dog hybrid, authorities said.
Such hybrids are illegal to own in New York.
Police found the approximately 3-year-old female wearing a collar and chain near Elton Street and Vandalia Avenue, said Richard Gentles, spokesman for Animal Care and Control.
“She’s not a wild animal,” Gentles said, but “nobody’s come forward to claim her.
“What we’ll try to do is place her with one of the animal groups we partner with that have experience with wolf-dog hybrids.”
