Mayor Bloomberg headed off a New York-New Jersey border war today by describing the New York Giants as a “regional team” that could be celebrated by both states if they go on to win the Super Bowl.

New Jersey Gov. Christie tried to get a rise out of Bloomberg earlier this week with a pre-emptive announcement that he intends to host a Super Bowl parade in the Garden State if the Giants make it through their next two games to emerge as the best team in football.

But the mayor wasn’t playing along.

Injecting reasonableness where it doesn’t belong — the world of sports — Bloomberg said Christie had a point.

“I’m sympathetic with the governor because these two teams (the Giants and Jets), we always say New York, they do play in New Jersey,” the mayor reflected on his weekly WOR radio show.

“Again, the bottom line — they are regional teams. Fans come from both places…It’s all one big region. I’m just glad the governor cares and wants to do it. When they win– I don’t want to jinx it — rest assured we’ll work out something.”
