The city doesn’t need more cops because crime is under control, Mayor Bloomberg declared today.
“Our job is not to employ as many of the people and to spend as much as the taxpayers’ money as we can,” the mayor said on his weekly WOR radio show. “Our job with the Police Department is to bring crime down. It is phenomenally well managed.”
The NYPD’s manpower has held steady for years at about 35,000 uniformed officers, a level the chairman of the City Council’s Public Safety Committee says is inadequate.
“Not only is the usual summer spike worse than ever, crime is increasing in every borough for first time in 20 years,” said Councilman Peter Vallone Jr.(D-Queens) “Those are the stats. The mayor is like the little boy who didn’t cry wolf even though there is a giant wolf coming.”
The peak headcount of 40,700 was reached in 2001-2002.
But the mayor argued that more cops wouldn’t necessarily translate into lower crime rates.
“When we came into office we reduced the size by 4,000 or 5,000 and we’ve maintained that for 10 years and every year we’ve brought crime down,” Bloomberg said. “What’d I miss here?”
The mayor pointed to the murder rate, which has declined to record lows during his tenure.
“If you had more cops would you get it down even more? I don’t think so,” he said.
