Mayor Bloomberg ripped into the state Assembly today, criticizing a new bill that would force the city to pay more to help New Yorkers with HIV/AIDS.

The bill, passed only by the Assembly, caps the rent for the ailing New Yorkers who receive public assistance for private shelter at 30 percent of their income.

The city would have to make up the difference, which Bloomberg’s team says will cost $15 million this year.

“To put that in perspective, $15 million could fund 10 fire companies or the hiring of over 200 new teachers,” said Michelle Goldstein, Bloomberg’s state legislative affairs director. “Make no mistake: this city stands second to none in its support of programs that provide critical assistance to those living with HIV/AIDS, but Albany’s addiction to unfunded mandates and not giving city taxpayers the money to meet those requirements must end.”
