WASHINGTON – Michael Bloomberg commissioned polling to test his chances for a 2016 independent presidential run, according to a new report.
The former New York City mayor hired pollsters last month to see how he’d fare against Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump if he were to launch a third-party run, according to CNN.
Rumors have long been swirling around Bloomberg’s political future. Since leaving office, he’s stayed active by pushing gun control and anti-soda measures elsewhere. The Post reported in June New York Democrats approached Bloomberg to gauge his interest in a White House bid.
The polling suggests the first serious step that Bloomberg is mulling a run, but an independent bid would ultimately tug at Clinton’s Democratic support.
A spokesman for Bloomberg declined comment.
