Former Mayor Mike Bloomberg’s foundation is donating $100 million for construction of the first academic building at the new Cornell Tech campus on Roosevelt Island.

The donation from Bloomberg Philanthropies comes at the start of the first phase of construction, which is slated for groundbreaking on Tuesday and completion by the summer of 2017.

The energy-efficient building, to be known as “The Bloomberg Center — in honor of Emma and Georgina Bloomberg,” the ex-mayor’s daughters, will feature the same type of open planning space for collaboration that he brought to his cubicle-filled bullpen at City Hall.
