A 13-year-old boy has been charged with murder over the death of his 11-year-old friend who was shot at a home in New York’s Hudson Valley, police announced on Friday.

The young teen was arrested and now faces second degree murder charges following the 11-year-old’s death in Newburgh on Thursday morning, the City of Newburgh Police Department said in a statement.

Officials said the boy shot and killed his friend, despite initial reports that the victim accidentally shot himself while playing with the gun.

Police were called to the home on North Miller Street at 8:17 a.m., police said.

“Officers arrived and located a single victim inside the residence who was deceased from a gunshot wound,” the statement read.

A gun was recovered from the scene and three juveniles of interest were identified after police swarmed on the scene.

The victim has not been named, and the exact circumstances surrounding the shooting are not yet known.

He was a student in the Newburgh Enlarged City School District, authorities said in a statement, without providing further details.

“The loss of one young life and the arrest of another is an unimaginable tragedy, one that deeply affects our entire school community. Two children, full of potential, now represent devastating losses in different ways,” the school district said.

“Our hearts ache for their families, their friends, their teachers, and everyone who has been touched by this tragedy.”

All schools in Newburgh were put on lockdown following the shooting as cops swarmed the town.

“The coordinated response of the City of Newburgh Police Department and the Non-Fatal Shooting Task Force and all partner agencies resulted in an arrest within 12 hours of the incident,” police said.

The Orange County District Attorney’s Office, Orange County Sheriff’s Office, Hudson Valley Safe Streets Task Force, State Police and ATF were all involved in the investigation, police said.
