A 5-year-old boy was stabbed inside a New Jersey home this week — and his mom was taken into police custody for questioning, according to reports.
The youngster was stabbed just after 5 p.m. inside the home on Murray Street near Brunswick Street in Newark’s Central Ward, the city’s public safety director, Fritz Fragé, told New Jersey 101.5.
He was taken to University Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition Tuesday.
His mom, Symona McGhee, 29, was questioned by detectives, and later charged with attempted murder, according to Essex County prosecutors.
Neighbor Phillip Valentine told WNYW that the boy’s parents had lived in the home for about two years, and described the stabbing as a shock.
“For that to happen it’s very weird, very weird,” Valentine said. “I see the kid in the background when they’re doing barbecues and stuff, always you know running around and being a kid, that’s all.”

It wasn’t immediately clear whether the boy’s mom would face charges. FOX 5 NY“That shouldn’t happen to no child at all, for no type of reason,” another neighbor told the network. “That is crazy.”
First responders could be seen coming and going from the home – focusing on the second floor – before carrying out a brown bag holding what appeared to be the weapon, according to the outlet.
