Lawyers for Bridget Anne Kelly, the former aide to New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie accused of scheming to snarl traffic as political payback, want to paint a picture of her for jurors as a hard-working single mom being hung out to dry by the former Port Authority exec who actually masterminded the plot.
In his opening remarks, Kelly’s lawyer Michael Critchley compared the government’s star witness David Wildstein to Kelly, a single mother of four who took the job in Trenton to make a modest $83,000 a year, a 50-percent hike from her previous job.
“He lives right now in the lap of luxury in Sarasota, Florida. He’s been living there ever since he entered a plea of guilty,” Critchley told jurors.
“His life has not changed one wit. He was a millionaire businessman before; he’s a millionaire businessman now,” Critchley said of Wildstein, who in 2006 sold his site PolitickerNJ.com to New York Observer owner and Donald Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner.
But the feds are moving to block Team Kelly from questioning Wildstein about his lavish lifestyle when he returns to the stand on Friday.
“It’s an appeal to class prejudice, and it’s improper,” prosecutor David Feder argued Wednesday.
“Distinguishing millionaire Mr. Wildstein from working mother Miss Kelly . . . based on net worth and class.”
Judge Susan Wigenton will rule Friday.
