The City Council has asked the city ethics board to examine whether a legislator violated regulations by hiring campaign donors to renovate his district office with taxpayer funds.

The move Tuesday by the Councils’ Committee on Standards & Ethics means Bronx Councilman Mark Gjonaj could potentially be fined twice, by the Conflicts of Interest Board as well as his own colleagues, plus face additional penalties.

The council committee met for more than an hour behind closed doors before chair Steven Matteo (R-Staten Island) announced its decision.

Citing confidentiality laws, committee members declined to name the subject of the probe, but sources confirmed it is Gjonaj.

The investigation surrounds a December press report that Gjonaj’s office paid $22,800 during his first seven months in office for renovation work done by businesses whose principals were Gjonaj campaign donors.

That included $9,700 in no-bid work to All Pro Design & Construction Corp., which shares the same Morris Park Avenue business address as a realty company Gjonaj listed as owning on his annual financial disclosure forms.

All Pro officials donated $2,000 to Gjonaj’s 2017 campaign.

Gjonaj declined comment.
