The corner where a Bronx teen died after being dragged out of a bodega and repeatedly stabbed was co-named in his honor on Wednesday.
The intersection of Bathgate Avenue and East 183rd Street will now be called “Lesandro Junior Guzman-Feliz Way.”
“Even in his youth, Lesandro stood out as a public servant in the making,” City Councilman Ritchie Torres said of Guzman-Feliz, whose caught-on-video slaying on June 20 at the hands of Trinatarios gang members stunned the community and the nation.
The 15-year-old was a member of the NYPD’s Explorer program and had dreamed of becoming a police officer since he was a young child.
“Junior’s spirit, captured in the words ‘Justice For Junior,’ has emerged as a national rallying cry against gang violence,” Torres continued. “Celebrities from Cardi B to Carmelo Anthony have commemorated his memory. Thousands of everyday people have paid respect at vigils, wakes and funerals.”
The NYPD swiftly arrested more than a dozen people following the slaying.
The street-naming event was also attended by Junior’s family, including his mother, who was celebrating a birthday; Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr., and Arndray Gay, one of Junior’s former teachers from Dr. Richard Izquierdo Health & Science Charter School.
“He had an infectious smile that left a huge impact on every last one of us and he also had this awkward laugh that I would not be able to duplicate,” Gay said. “He was a great young man. He left a huge void in all of our hearts — one that will never, ever be fulfilled again.”
